Unfortunately, I couldn't attend the class again because I went back to my hometown to celebrate Good Friday and it's a tradition that my family and I visit, at the same time clean my ancestors' cemetery. I think it is my responsibility as their granddaughter and it's the least that I could do for them.
So, I asked my friends what they learned during the class. I found out that the class was conducted by Dr Khalid and it was on tools utilized by teachers in class. The class discussed on the differences of traditional medias and the modern tools used in teaching.
In this era, almost everything is related to technology. In education, educators have started utilising technology in their lesson to make teaching and learning more interesting. Technology or most educators call it Educational Technology, is to develop, apply and evaluate the systems, techniques and aids to enhance students' learning, By using educational technology, students tend to learn better and pay more attention because technology is something that they also come across everyday. In this modern era, especially in the cities, it is quite rare to see teachers teach using just blackboard or the direct method where the class is teacher-oriented; students only listen while teacher is the only one talking in the class. It is important that there is interactions in the classroom to enhance learning and to develop critical and creative thinking among students. However, there are still cons in applying technology in teaching.
In my opinion, handouts is material that most of the teachers use in class. This is because it is easy to prepare and it can be referred when students want to do revision in the future. However, the negative side of using handouts is students being spoon fed with information. They don't think critically or try to find the information needed to understand the topic fully. This somewhat make students not to remember the important points of the topic that effectively unless they do continuous revision. But we know that not all students are able to do so. So, my suggestion about handouts is that teachers should not insert all the points or information in the handouts. Instead, students must fill in some of the blanks with information that they get from the teachers. That way, teachers can make them concentrate so that they are able to jot down the important points. Other than that, they are also able to remember and understand the topic better.
Besides handouts, teachers should keep up with the development of technologies so that they can make use of the technologies to make their lesson more interesting. For example, teachers can utilize the Computer Lab in the school to teach more interestingly using videos from youtube or presentation slides. Educational technology also includes applications like Kahoot; an online quiz that can be played by the whole class. It increases students' knowledge on a particular topic and encourage them to dig more on the topic. Furthermore, educational platform like OpenLearning is also one of the examples of Educational Technology. This allows students to discuss and interact with one another. Teachers are also able to interact with students on the platform. It can act as a classroom management medium whereby teachers can make announcements straight away on the platform or teachers can even post questions and materials for students to read and have further discussion. In this case, students not only learn in class but also outside the class.
In short, I think both traditional and modern ways of teaching should be continuously utilised depending on different situations. Both ways produce similar outcome if utilised properly.
Too bad, I couldn't join my friends for the presentation. These are the video clips of the presentations.
